Dr. Ubaldo Leli was born in Italy, where he was educated in the humanities and music, majoring in philosophy, Latin, and classical Greek, before attending medical school. After earning his M.D. from the University of Perugia in 1979, he relocated in 1984 to McLean Hospital in Boston, U.S.A.—a psychiatric teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School--where he became Assistant Professor of Biochemistry in the Department of Psychiatry from 1989 to 1992.

At Harvard Medical School he pursued research in biochemistry—specifically, neurochemical research on the molecular mechanisms of neuroplasticity, signal transduction and protein kinases. During this period he was author or co-author of thirty papers published in peer-reviewed international journals. In 1992, he returned to clinical work, completing a residency in psychiatry at New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center, Westchester Division.

In 1993, during his psychiatry residency, Dr. Leli applied and, after screening, was accepted as a candidate at the Columbia Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research at Columbia University.  He underwent his personal training analysis with Dr. Otto Kernberg from 1994 through 1999—three years at a frequency of four times per week, and two years at five times per week. In 1999, he graduated from the psychoanalytic center, obtaining a Certificate in Psychoanalysis.

The Columbia Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research is a psychoanalytic training institute affiliated with the American Psychoanalytic Association, following the Eitington tripartite model of training, which requires a frequency of four to five sessions per week for analysis of both candidates and patients. In addition to the academic course work, the Columbia Center’s program requires supervised analysis of at least three patients, of both sexes, under supervision. Dr. Leli analyzed four cases—two women and two men—before obtaining permission to accept unsupervised cases. After his graduation, in 2000, he was invited to join the teaching faculty of the Columbia Center. He became a full member of both the American Psychoanalytic Association and the International Psychoanalytic Association in 1999.

Dr. Leli is currently a Lecturer in Psychiatry at the College of Physicians and Surgeons, Columbia University, and a member of the faculty of the Columbia Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research.  He is also a Clinical Associate in Psychiatry at the Weill Cornell Medical College and at the New York Presbyterian Hospital. He is a psychoanalytic supervisor for psychiatric residents from the Department of Psychiatry of the College of Physician and Surgeons, Columbia University, psychology fellows from the Cornell Department of Psychology, and psychiatrists, psychologists and other mental health professionals in private practice in New York City.

Dr. Leli taught Biological Chemistry at Harvard Medical School from 1984 to 1986. He currently teaches the segment on Basic Principles of Psychoanalysis (Sigmund Freud’s works) as part of the course of Human Development, and a course on Process in Long-term Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy for the Columbia University residents.

Dr. Leli is a member of the American Psychiatric Association, the American Psychoanalytic Association, the Federation of the American Societies for Experimental Biology, the American Chemical Society, the American Medical Association, and the International Psychoanalytic Association.

Dr. Leli’s main areas of interest in psychoanalysis include character pathology, countertransference, transcultural and gender issues, and sexual orientation. He is a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Gay and Lesbian Psychotherapy, and has recently edited the book Transgender Subjectivities: A Clinician’s Guide, published by Haworth Press. Since 1996, Dr. Leli has maintained a full time private practice in psychiatry and psychoanalysis in New York City (www.doctorleli.com). Since his graduation Dr. Leli’s private practice has consisted of at least five psychoanalytic cases (a minimum of 24 visits per week) as well as face to face psychotherapies and general psychiatry patients.

Dr. Leli’s personal interests include languages and linguistics, philosophy, and history. Dr. Leli also composes classical music, including chamber, vocal, and orchestral pieces.
